Heritage: protected buildings and the inventory

Quebec’s Cultural Heritage Act lets the province classify or the municipality cite a building, and protects heritage sites (for example Old Montréal or Mount Royal). In those cases most exterior work, extensions or demolition need approval from the culture ministry or the municipality.

Municipalities also keep an inventory of buildings built before 1940. Being in the inventory is not a protection by itself, but demolition or some work can take more steps and time.

On our pages a protected building is a Serious finding; a building in the inventory or inside a heritage site is a Check or a Note. If you plan work, ask the borough before you make an offer.
